The search results are generally presented in a line of results often referred to as search engine results pages. The search engine can be recognized as the database system that is designed to index and categorize internet addresses, or it can be known as URLs.

The search engines can be categorized in about 4 types generally, like automatic search engines, directories, meta search engines, PPC search engines and so forth. The automatic search engines are based on information that is collected, sorted and analyzed by software programs, and they are commonly referred to as "robots", "spiders", or "crawlers". They crawl through webpages to collect information, and analyze and categorize the information into an index. The results of the search depends on the contents of that index and its relevancy to your query. The directory is a searchable subject guide of web sites that have been reviewed and compiled by human editors. These editors decide which sites to list and in which categories. While the meta search engines are automated technology to gather information from a spider and then deliver a summary of that information as the results of a search to the end user. And the PPC search engine determines ranking in according to the dollar amount you pay for each click from that search engine to your site.

Generally, search engines work under the help of spiders. Taking Google for an example, the spiders craw the Internet from link to link to identify webpages and compile databases. Once search engine spiders find a web site, they index the content and make your URLs available to Internet users. The spiders regularly return to the URLs they index to look for changes. The index is updated to reflect the new information when changes occur. Generally, the way you turn to search engines to find something on the Internet is equal to ask search engine to scan its databases and match your keywords and phrases with content of the URLs they have on file at that time.

There are many search engines like Google, Yaohoo, MSN, and so forth. Nowadays, Google is the biggest search engine in the world and it owns major users worldwide. Search engines are the most effective and efficient way to find information based on your specific search requirement actually in comparison with other ways to find available information on the Internet. Frankly, search engines are different in sizes, speed and content and optimized methods. So, the searching results may differ greatly if you choose different search engines.
